Israel has bombed Gaza’s so-called ‘safe zones,’ the last fragments of ground where civilians were told they would not be targeted, despite them being targeted repeatedly throughout this Genocide. This comes hours before peace talks were set to begin in Egypt.
Israel chose to send a message written in fire and blood: there is no safety for Palestinians, not even in the spaces Israel itself designates as safe, and peace comes on our terms, even as Donald Trump has asked for them to stop.
Across Gaza, attacks have killed at least 70 Palestinians in 24 hours, including 4 killed in an attack on an aid distribution site in Rafah, and this morning’s attack on ‘safe zones.’ When we say ‘at least’ in the context of Gaza, it is important that you understand that this is an undercount. In Gaza, and only in Gaza, being dead is not enough to be counted, you must have died in possession of an ID, and you must be at a hospital, or brought to one after death.
Israel have killed over 67,000 people so far in their Genocide on the Palestinian people in Gaza, and similarly, this is a confirmed undercount. Some very credible estimates put this number in the hundreds of thousands.
If Israel is not committing genocide, it should have no problem proving it. In the face of peace talks, stop attacking innocent people. There is not rights that Israel has to bomb innocent people, regardless, but seen as the world continues to offer them an exemption to international law, we must use this language that make a mockery of that international law.
It is not defence to bomb a ‘safe zone,’ much like it is not defence to ethnically cleanse an entire region and it is absolutely not defence to continue to commit a Genocide, in the face of Hamas offering to hand over power in Gaza, along with any remaining hostages.
As negotiators gather in Cairo, Gaza gathers its dead. And while the world’s diplomats speak of “progress,” Israel continues to write its answer in smoke.
If this is not genocide, then when does Israel plan on proving it?
