Israel Breaks Ceasefire, Cancels Opening Of Rafah Crossing

Is this the end of the Ceasefire already?

Just yesterday, many world leaders and journalists had been singing the praises of the peace plan agreed to by Hamas and Israel, and those who weren’t praised the end to the continued genocidal violence that the Palestinians in Gaza have been forced to live under daily. A day later, we have reports of Israelis attacks in Gaza.

Several people have been injured by occupation fire, according to an ambulance member who spoke to Al Jazeera Arabic. Al Mayadeen news have expanded further, informing readers that the shooting had taken place at the Halawa camp for displaced people, again stating that there are multiple injuries. You would be forgiven for missing this news if you only read the news in English, as every major source has simply decided not to cover the story at the time of writing this piece.

Israel’s Defence Minister had informed Hebrew media that they had planned on breaking the ceasefire before it came into effect, promising to destroy the remaining Hamas tunnels the moment they receive the hostages. The hostages have been returned, and now, on day 5 of the ceasefire, we have Israeli troops firing on Palestinians within the Gaza Strip.

Israeli media have pushed forward the idea that Hamas had broken the ceasefire yesterday when only 4 bodies were handed over to the Red Cross. This idea is a rather flimsy one, as the Israeli delegation had previously agreed to help find the bodies of the hostages that have been lost during the Israeli bombardment of the Strip, an offer repeated by the other countries involved in the peace process.

Update 12:11:

Israel have confirmed that their troops fired on citizens of Gaza. The story given by the Israeli regime is that approaching citizens had broken the ceasefire, allowing the troops to open fire. In a statement on Telegram, the IDF have stated that the citizens crossed the yellow line agreed to in the ceasefire deal, however, no proof of this has been supplied.

Update 12:38:

Local authorities in Gaza have confirmed that 6 people have been killed by the Israeli soldiers in the attacks this morning. The IDF on Telegram confirmed that those killed were not terrorists, and also warned Palestinians in Gaza to stay far away from their positions. There has still been no offer of evidence from the Israeli military that their positions had been approached or breached, and the IDF have not responded to a request for comment.

Earlier today (Tuesday), several suspects were identified crossing the yellow line and approaching IDF troops operating in the northern Gaza Strip, which constitutes a violation of the agreement.

Attempts were made to distance the suspects. The suspects did not comply and continued approaching the troops, who opened fire to remove the threat.

The reports regarding terrorists’ infiltration to an IDF position are incorrect.

The IDF calls on Gaza residents to follow its instructions and not to approach the troops deployed in the area.

Update 13:51:

There have been reports of a tank firing on citizens northwest of Rafah in South Gaza, along with a drone attacking citizens who were inspecting their homes in the Shajaiya neighbourhood outside of Gaza City. In another incident in Khan Yunis, a person has been killed and 2 more injured, after Israeli troops opened fire on citizens.

Hamas have accused Israel of breaking the ceasefire, and requested that the mediators, stating they must “follow up the behavior of the occupation, and not allow it to escape from its obligations to the mediators regarding the end of the war on the Gaza Strip.”

Update 14:10:

There are reports of shelling in both the north and south of Gaza City, as it seems Israel is no longer willing to hold to the peace agreement. This marks the fifth violation of the ceasefire in as many hours. Any evidence of the initial event claimed by Israel has still not been presented, the IDF have not responded to a request for comment to us or any other source at the time of writing.

Update 15:16pm:

Nasser Medical Complex said that Palestinians were injured by Israeli drone fire in the Ma’an area of Khan Yunis in South Gaza. There has still been no response from Hamas to any of today’s attacks, despite Israeli claims that Hamas have broken the ceasefire.

To summarise, both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of breaking the ceasefire, while Hamas have not fired a shot at any Israeli soldier or position, there have been 6 separate attacks inside Gaza by Israel.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s statement in the House of Commons that the attacks have ended, despite the ongoing attacks.

Update 15:41:

Israel will no longer open the Rafah border crossing tomorrow, as had been agreed to, and the Netanyahu regime will significantly reduce aid going into Gaza, according to Israel’s Channel 13 news. The Israeli leadership claims that this is due to Hamas releasing only 4 bodies yesterday, despite aid demands already not being met by the genocidal state.
